iPhone is all the craze these days, with all blogs whizing about the latest and greatest and coolest features of the gadget that seems to be a revolution in itself. But there are reasons out there that make you NOT go for the iPhone. Always remember.. “all that glitters, is not gold… ”

So here we go:
- iPhone completely blocks free software. Developers must pay a tax to Apple, who becomes the sole authority over what can and can’t be on everyone’s phones.
- iPhone endorses and supports Digital Restrictions Management (DRM) technology.
- iPhone exposes your whereabouts and provides ways for others to track you without your knowledge.
- iPhone won’t play patent- and DRM-free formats like Ogg Vorbis and Theora.
Now, if you are a person who tries out free softwares on cellphones, the iphone is not for you. Apple asks for money foe Every software that you want, other than the ones that come with the iphone.
Digital rights management (DRM) is a generic term that refers to access control technologies used by hardware manufacturers, publishers and copyright holders to limit usage of digital media or devices. DRM overlaps with software copy protection to some extent, however the term “DRM” is usually applied to creative media (music, films, etc.) whereas the term “copy protection” tends to refer to copy protection mechanisms in computer software.
So basically, DRM technologies attempt to control use of digital media by preventing access, copying or conversion by end users to other formats, and atleast im against that. I move around with my media collection here and there, and pass it on to friends, and get some trom them.
The iPhone has a Location-Awareness software, that using the inbuilt gps system can tell you your approximate location at any moment. Lifehacker did a n article on uses of the feature sometime back. And even though Location Aware devices can be a very usefull feature, BUT using any device or piece of software requires some level of trust that its manufacturer won’t completely screw you—too badly, anyway. Still, every time an iPhone app wants permission to use my current location, I would get creeped out and more often than not tap “Don’t Allow.”
Lastly, ive used an iphone for some time, and i truly liked it lookswise, and features wise aswell. It has a class of its own, and is a technological advancement by everymeans. But the above facts, combined with the fact that it Lacks HWR (Hand Writing Recognition) really pushes me not to buy an iphone.

Well, besides being untrue, your report is also false. There is plenty of free software for the iPhone. Go look at the app store.
Yes, iPhone supports iTunes DRM, but it also supports all the DRM Free mp3’s that Apple and everyone else is selling.
Vorbis and theora?!?!?!? Nobody uses them!!! . . . .really now, is this the best you have?
And the user totally controls if the GPS awareness is on or off. Its an option that enables really cool features and its up to you to turn it on or off. Yeah, you are a really good reporter!!!!!

I am glad to see that u did reply to the post
Thankyou for that
As far as the free softwares in the App store is concerned, they are merely giveaways by apple to the users. They are developed by apple/partner firms, and are fee to use for users.
The confusion is Free Software, as defined by GNU can be found here:
http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html
Free software is something like i have on my Windows Mobile. Anyone including me can create software, and spread it, and it can be modified / distributed irrespective of any obligations by Microsoft. That is not possible on iPhone.
AND yes iPhone can handle non-drm files, but the fact that Apple Endores the DRM Policy is itself a letdown for me. And the support of DRM free formats is a part of this
Its the principal that im against.
Also, the location aware situation can get worse for people who are concerned about their privacy. Since the feature can be turned off for the OS, it is still available for use by other software, that might NOT ask u for permission!

I hate anything Apple, because of few core reasons:
1. Its used as a “status” and “hip” symbol
2. They charge more for everything
3. Their stress is more on aesthetics rather than core power and that is not understood by common consumer.
Now coming to particularly iPhone:
two people i know used it.. both sold it later. Their experience was bad.. the phone only looked good but from battery time to usability .. everything was a let down.
and dude OGG format is not dead. All gaming industry has adopted as std audio format as they dont have to pay anyone for using it and its equally good to wma or mp3. My current mp3 player and mobile support it. And even if u check now there are more ogg files in my mobile than mp3.
